The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick has as its purpose the conferral of a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in grave illness or old age.
Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1527
In days past, this sacrament was known as Extreme Unction and popularly as the Last Rites. It was common for one to wait until the very last moments of earthly life before sharing in this sacrament of God’s healing and forgiveness. Today, in addition to those who are preparing for death, this sacrament is offered to anyone who is ill or may be facing surgery as a graced encounter with Christ, our Divine Physician.
The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is celebrated in a variety of ways at Holy Spirit Parish. In the spring and in the fall, the sacrament is offered to all who wish to receive it in a communal setting at a designated 4:00pm Saturday Vigil mass.
At all other times, simply inform Fr. Phil of your desire to receive the sacrament after mass or by making an appointment during the week. If you are in the hospital, please call the parish office (216-581-0981) and request a visit from our pastor or ask to see the Catholic chaplain assigned to serve the hospital where you are a patient.
The disciples went off and preached repentance. They drove out many demons and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
